Chefchaouen, the blue city of the Rif, is one of the most photographed places in Morocco. It is further from Marrakech than other excursions, so it is best treated as a stage of a longer road trip.
Distances and driving times
From Marrakech the distance exceeds 600 km, about 8 to 9 hours on the road. From Fès, count about 200 km and 3 to 4 hours. Distances and times are indicative. The most comfortable plan is to sleep in Fès or Rabat and reach Chefchaouen the next day.
A three-stage circuit
- Day 1: Marrakech to Fès by motorway
- Day 2: Fès to Chefchaouen on mountain roads
- Day 3: visit the blue city, then return or continue north
The mountain road
The last part of the trip is winding and crosses the green landscapes of the Rif. Drive carefully, especially in rain or fog. Fill up before climbing.
Parking in Chefchaouen
The medina is narrow and pedestrian. Leave the car in a car park at the entrance of the town, then explore on foot. Walk up to Outa el-Hammam square and the higher streets for the best view of the blue houses.
Photo and visiting tips
Lanes are quieter early in the morning. Respect residents: ask before photographing someone. A 3 to 4 hour visit is enough for the medina, longer if you want to walk to the nearby waterfalls.
