The ksar of Aït Benhaddou, a fortified earthen village listed by UNESCO, is one of the best excursions from Marrakech. The road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
Distance and driving time
Count about 180 km and 3.5 to 4 hours on the road, depending on traffic and photo stops. Distances and times are indicative. A full day is possible, but staying overnight is more comfortable.
The road and the pass
From Marrakech, follow the main road south-east, then climb to the Tizi n'Tichka, a pass that peaks at about 2,260 m. The road is winding, with tight bends and sometimes slow trucks: overtake only when visibility is good. In winter, snow or ice can appear on the pass, so check conditions before leaving.
Mountain driving tips
- Start with a full tank and some water
- Adapt your speed on descents and use engine braking
- Avoid driving the pass at night
- Take breaks: there are many viewpoints
Visiting the ksar
The ksar is visited on foot from the car park, crossing the riverbed. Many films and series were shot here. Climb to the top for the view over the valley. Ouarzazate, with its film studios, is about 30 km away.
Which car to choose?
A city car is enough on paved roads. An SUV offers more comfort and ground clearance if you plan tracks or detours in the valley.
