Essaouira is the easiest getaway from Marrakech: a good road, argan-tree landscapes and the Atlantic at the end. Here is how to plan the drive in a rental car.
Distance and driving time
Count about 190 km and 2.5 to 3 hours on the road, depending on traffic and stops. Distances and times are indicative. Leave early in the morning to enjoy the medina before the crowds and avoid the summer heat.
The route
From Marrakech, the main road heading west crosses flat land and then hills covered with argan trees. You will pass argan-oil cooperatives and sometimes goats standing in the trees, a classic photo stop. Stay alert in villages, where speed limits apply and police checks are frequent.
Parking in Essaouira
The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is visited on foot. Leave the car in a car park outside the ramparts, then walk in through one of the gates. Never leave belongings visible inside the car.
What to see in one day
- The ramparts and the Skala de la Ville facing the ocean
- The fishing port and its blue boats
- The medina lanes, art galleries and marquetry workshops
- The beach, often swept by trade winds: bring a light jacket
Day trip or weekend?
A same-day return is possible, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the sunset over the ramparts. With unlimited mileage you can also continue to other beaches along the coast.
